A Conference For Web Developers And Designers
We’re taking the show on the road! Smashing Magazine has been with its readers for years, no matter which country they lived in. It only seemed natural to bring the Conference closer to the readers as well. After the success of our first US Conference, we’re planing to follow up with a Smashing Conference in Canada from 18th-21st. Whistler, here we come!
The Smashing Conference New York 2014
New york. In the sweltering month of June we finally hopped the Atlantic and hosted our first conference in the United States. Thanks to our amazing speakers, among them the mystery speaker Jessica Hische, and especially, thanks to our wonderful and enthusiastic attendees, who made us feel right at home, the New York Conference was a great success. And let’s not forget Val Head’s amazing musical glow-sticks introduction that lent our corner of this vibrant city just that much more glitz and glimmer. What an amazing event!
The Smashing Conference Oxford 2014
End of March 2014 the Smashing Conference went abroad for the first time. We kicked off the international event series in the lovely, historic town of Oxford. Besides our amazing speakers, such as Lea Verou, Andrew Clarke, Addy Osmani, Paul Boag and many other luminaries, the participants and team alike were delighted by a laser-show Seb Lee-Delisle put on to properly celebrate our first event in the UK. The beautiful Oxford Town Hall proved to be a magical setting to a very technical happening, a contrast that has already made the Smashing Conference such a success in our hometown of Freiburg.
The Smashing Conference 2013
Last year the Smashing Conference 2013 was completely Smashing! Organised in-house, the conference took place a little earlier than the first year, on September 9-11th. The hugely popular Historical Merchant Hall in the center of Freiburg, once again hosted the event. It was a single-track event, with two conference days, one workshop day, 18 excellent speakers and just 300 available seats.
Some of the big names speaking at the Smashing Conference 2013 on the 9th and 10th were Ethan Marcotte, Addy Osmani, Andy Hume, Dan Mall, Dan Rubin, David Březina, Inayaili de Léon Persson, Jason Santa Maria, Luke Wroblewski and Tim Kadlec. Brad Frost, Dan Mall, Addy Osmani, Dan Rubin and Luke Wroblewski also lead amazing workshops on the 9th and 11th.

The Smashing Conference 2012
Organized by Marc Thiele and Vitaly Friedman, the inaugural conference took place on the 17th and 18th of September 2012 in Freiburg, Germany, with a schedule that included expert speakers and practical workshops. The success of the first conference has motivated us to establish the Smashing Conference as an annual recurrence.

The Smashing Conference Locations
The historic “Kaufhaus” (Merchant’s Hall, built 1520-30) is the venue for the two days of conference and one of the workshops.
It is a symbol of the importance of trade in medieval Freiburg. The municipal market, customs and financial administration building is identified as a center of trade by its arcades hall. Its façade is decorated with coats of arms and statues indicating the city’s links with the House of Habsburg.
The beautiful ambience of the Historical Merchants Hall underlines our goal to create something special for you.
The historic venue for Smashing Conference was incredible. — Andy Clarke
The conference took place at the famous historical Merchant Hall of Freiburg, a superb choice for an event. The building gleamed with a classic German vibe and made you feel part of something special. — The Next Web
The Oxford Town Hall is a magnificent historic building from the height of the British Empire. Built in the 19th century, this venue’s beautiful architecture demonstrates the opulence and traditionalism of the Victorian era and will provide a picturesque backdrop to the first Smashing Conference on British soil.
We look forward to holding our first overseas conference in such an amazing location.
